When the PCV valve is open, crankcase vapour, unspent fuel and oil sludge can be drawn into the intake manifold – the catch can acts as an inline filter, trapping and holding these contaminants before they reach the engine. The can is pressure sealed, so it can be connected to the intake manifold at any boost level with no check valve required. Typical catch cans that are not serviced regularly can allow collected fluid to pour out of the reservoir and into the intake, hurting engine performance.
